Dissapointing First-Rounders Swapped

Linebacker Bobby Carpenter of the Cowboys and offensive-tackle Alex Barron of the Rams are changing places as Dallas brings in some depth on the offensive line.

This was rumored to be a done-deal last week, but now it's final: the Dallas Cowboys have sent the former 18th overall pick of the 2006 NFL draft Bobby Carpenter to the St Louis Rams for a first-rounder in 2005 in Alex Barron.

While Barron appears to be a player with some serious issues in terms of penalties (Flozell Adams anyone?) with 43 false start penalties in five seasons and five holding calls to lead the NFL last season, he did start 74 games for the Rams, and the Cowboys needed another big body on the line. If Doug Free struggles at left tackle, Dallas now has a couple of options at the position. Barron can also play the right tackle spot, so if Marc Columbo goes down there's also some much-needed depth there.

For Carpenter it was just a case of not producing and, with the Cowboys taking linebacker Sean Lee in the second round of the NFL draft last month, it was time to go. Carpenter never really fit with the Cowboys and could be labeled as the worst draft bust of the Bill Parcells' era. He actually had his best season statistically last season, a year in which he had 46 tackles, one pass defensed, and two sacks. He's only 26 years old so he could still have a decent career on the right team with the right amount of playing time.

This is a good move for Dallas in which you move a young, mediocre player from a position which you are stacked, for a young, mediocre player at a position you need. Especially with the departure of Adams, the Cowboys needed more experience on the offensive line.

Dallas also signed unrestricted free agent Montrae Holland to a two-year contract earlier today.
