Rangers Sweep Tigers - Magic Number In Single Digits

Texas extends Majors-best winning streak to seven with two game sweep of Detroit. The combination of Ranger wins/Oakland A's losses to make the playoffs is now eight thanks to a huge series from David Murphy (above) and the rest of the offense. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)

Josh who?

David Murphy continues to make life easier for the Texas Rangers (82-63), even with superstar Josh Hamilton looking on from the bench with ailing ribs. In the last two games against the Detroit Tigers (72-74) alone, Murphy went 4 for 9, belted two home runs and knocked in six runs.

Texas came back from down 4-1 in the first game and 2-0 in the second for big wins thanks to a resurgent offense. Over the last two games, Texas has accumulated 22 runs on 26 hits. Every starter had a least one hit Tuesday night, and all but catcher Bengie Molina had one Wednesday.

Texas now has a season-high 10-game lead in the American League West and the division title should be secured within the next week. For the Rangers to miss the playoffs, the A's would have to win out and Texas would have to finish the season worse than 8-9 over the final 17 games.

"We've set ourselves up," Rangers' manager Ron Washington said. "Now we've got to continue playing our brand of baseball. I like our brand of baseball."

The Rangers now head out to the road for a season-high 10-game road swing against the division., before finishing the season on a seven game home stand.

News and Notes:
  • Detroit is the final Rangers' non-A.L. West opponent for the rest of the season. Texas final 17 games are all against the Seattle Mariners, Oakland A's, and L.A. Angels.
